O’s Notes: Samuel Torres is a master conguero and percussionist. He leads a core sextet through fourteen original funky Latin songs starting with “Un Atardercer en Cartegena de Indias”. Joel Frahm plays a warm sax on “Bambuco” following the spirited first three selections. Michael Rodriguez plays the harmonizing trumpet and flugelhorn adding sharp accents for punch. Torres surrounds himself with a funky rhythm section: Manuel Valera (keyboards), John Benitez (b) and Ernesto Simpson (d). They combine to produce an endless array of syncopated, funky rhythms. The listener who isn’t tapping along is either dead or deaf! The music speaks volumes on this one start to finish.
