O’s Notes: This trio, Tony Dumas (b) Ralph Penland (d) and leader Mike Melvoin (p) are playing slow, swinging jazz. It is sometimes bluesy as on “They Sing The Blues In Kansas City” and sometimes jazzy like on “Giant Steps”. But it is always more than the standard covers. Mike’s arrangements flow like a refreshing cool breeze. The standards are mixed with originals to keep the session engaging. Among the best of the latter is “Son Of The Beach” an upbeat, bubbly number. It is a very good set.
