O’s Notes: Pianist Roberto Fonseca gives us a versatile performance of Latin jazz, a blend of Brazilian and Cuban rhythms that is dynamic. “Ishmael” has an exotic feel while “Trista Lagria” is a symphonic large ensemble song. The interaction between the musicians is seamless especially the integration of piano with percussion notably on “Clandestino”. Omar Gonzalez (b), Ramses Rodriguez (d, perc), Emilio Del Monte Mata (bongos) and Emilio Del Monte Valdes (palas) provide the beats. Fonseca pours a lot of feeling into the keys and Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal punctuates the music with crisp accents on trumpet with Javier Zalba playing sax.
