O’s Notes: James Zollar plays trumpet and leads a fine band through ten selections. The program includes pop and jazz classics plus a few originals. Co-producer Nabuko Kiryu, Zollar’s wife, adds vocals on “Go-En” and “Take the Subway Home”, tune that she composed. Zollar shines on the cover of “The Nearness of You”. They really swing on Zollar’s “Slick” and the cover of “Spasmatic Movements” featuring guest Don Byron (cl). We also enjoyed “Black Winter” written by pianist Rick Germanson.
