O’s Notes: This is a remastered recording of 1976’s performance at Umbria Jazz. The players are David Schmitter (sax), Bill Hardman (t), Mickey Tucker (p), Cameron Brown (b) and leader Art Blakey (d). Blakey is the standout performer for this show. He establishes himself as a world class drummer on the opener, “Backgammon” and takes it through all six songs. The music is modern jazz, what Blakey calls rhythm and swing with a dose of soul. They don’t hold back on The Jazz Club.
