O’s Notes: This pair of legends had not recorded together in over 50 years! They started their musical careers together at Tony’s Bar in Brooklyn during 1951. From there Phil (sax, cl) and Herbie (fl) went on to many successes on the jazz front. This live session at MCG captures their past and brings us to the session where both remain very capable jazz performers. It turned out to be the last recording for Mann who died in 2003. The Latin flavored songs like “Sir Charles Duke” were our favorites. Other program highlights include “Blood Count”, “Au Privave” with well-synchronized lead lines and “Time After Time” which was recorded after the original session a few weeks before Herbie passed away.
