O’s Notes: Drummer Owen Howard leads a fine band rich with brass and performing a variety of tradition jazz classics. “Arboretum” really swings including solos by John O’Gallagher (as), Alan Ferber (tb), and Frank Carlberg (p). The program also includes “Zoot Suite”, a brassy avant-garde piece with a nice solo by Howard. The melancholy mood of “It Should’ve Happened A Long Time Ago” is a change of pace midway through the set. Owen displays his mastery on “Togo” with well-developed solos. We enjoyed the toe-tapping groove of “The Chief” and “Roundabout” the sole original. They wrap up the set with “Flip” featuring Ferber and Adam Kolker (b cl) and another fine drum solo form the leader.
