O’s Notes: This was the final recording from the late jazz pianist and composer Lyle Mays. It has a layered history starting as a piece to commemorate the final concert at the 2009 Zeltsman Marimba Festival. It was Lyle’s tribute to the legendary bassist, composer Eberhard Weber, a major influencer in his works. Mays revisited the lengthy song in 2019 preparing for this recording. The music is relaxing and warm, building intensity and engaging listeners. It is a timeless approach that still resonates with jazz-fusion audiences. “Eberhard” features many talented musicians including Bob Sheppard (reeds), Alex Acuña (d, perc), Bill Frisell (g), Steve Roby (b) and Mitchel Forman (keyboards). It is a worthy 13-minute exchange.
