O’s Notes: This quintet features Dick Oats (sax), Brian Lynch (t), Johannes Weidenmüller (b), John Riley (d) and leader pianist Ted Rosenthal. Ted has been celebrated globally winning many competitions including the Thelonious Monk Competition for jazz piano. He excels as a composer and arranger of classic jazz pieces. But he’s also very good as a band member. Most of the tunes are relaxed on Expressions but they really pick up the pace on a few tracks, most notably “Bar Hopping” with each musician soloing on a rapid sequence.
