O’s Notes: Pianist Chestnut widens his audience with guitarist Russell Malone adding very catching rhythms behind his improvisations. He employs Michael Hawkins (b) and Neal Smith (d) to form his basic trio accentuated with Malone and or Steven Kroon (perc) on selected cuts. All of Chestnut’s influences come through: gospel, R&B, Latin and blues, all with a sense of swing. Whether they play upbeat songs like “El Numero Tres” or more subtle ballads like “If” they have the right formula.
