O’s Notes: Bassist Putter Smith is a swinging musician who never holds back. Listeners are rewarded with daring improvisation that feels good! We get a taste of that groove on Home, a collection of seven freshly arranged classics and four originals. Theo Sanders (p), Kendall Kay (d), Jon Whitney (as) and John Gross (ts) complement Smith. They open with a blaze on the syncopated title track. We feel a playful spirit on songs like “For Us” and “Epistrophy” with Putter walking and Saunders sprinting across the keys. When it is time to reflect, we enjoyed the passion of “Love Song for Kirsi”. We also dug the Latin vibe on “Cantu de Ossanha”. It is a well-balanced set.
