O’s Notes: Step back to 1968 at The Top of The Gate in the Village, lower Manhattan. A jazz pianist was taking the world by storm! Bill had a formidable trio with a young bassist Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell on drums. They are unencumbered and let their inspirations surface. Two sets are recorded, one on each disc. All are improvised standards except Evans’ “Turn Out the Stars”. Three songs are repeated but each is different illustrating the level of spontaneous fusion going on. A detailed booklet with stories, photos and documentation accompanies the set. This is an excellent snapshot of Evans with a trio that stuck together for quite a while!
