O’s Notes: Jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner was Roy Hargrove’s keyboardist for 8 years before branching out as a leader. It’s all first takes on his latest album, a trio set with Peter Washington on bass and drummer Marcus Gilmore, recorded live, unrehearsed, at The Village Vanguard. The mood is New Orleans with hints of ragtime on “Southern Nights”, swinging on “Daahoud”, a taste of the Caribbean on “Tres Palabras”. There’s nothing overly flashy, but everything fits wonderfully for this pleasant, laid-back session.
