O’s Notes: Who can dispute the stature of Duke and his large ensemble? This 1958 live session was filmed in Amsterdam. Ellington’s orchestra included Johnny Hodges (as), Paul Gonslaves (ts), Clark Terry (t) and Ozzie Bailey (vocals). They played thirteen songs including “Ellington Medley” which included no less than ten of his all time best. “Hi-Fi-Fo-Fum” featured a superb drum solo by Sam Woodyard, one of many fine solos that we see and hear during this session. These men were elegant, professional and stately!
