O’s Notes: Richie Beirach (p), Gregor Huebner (v) and George Mraz (b) come together to play the music of Monteverdi. This is the third jazz transposition of great classical works. The first two were centered on Bartok, then Federico Mompou. They open playing “Lamento d’ Arianna” in it’s true form. But lest you think these are jazz musicians playing classical music! By the third track, they had infused enough swinging improvisation to get us fully engaged. The effect of this trio interpreting classical compositions allows a strong appreciation of their musicianship and brings respect to works from a different era to jazz audiences.
