O’s Notes: The program is a blend of traditional songs with modern jazz. Bassist Avery Sharpe does a fine job with his original compositions and arrangements bringing vibrancy and the spirit of the moment to life. The central theme is rooted around Sojourner Truth, the legendary African American activist and abolitionist who took the nation by storm in the 1860s. The music follows that theme with emotional pleas and passion coming from a strong band. Onaje Allan Gumbs (p), Craig Handy (sax), Duane Eubanks (t) and Yoron Israel (d) keep the beats tight all the way through while Jeri Brown adds vocals, vocalese and scatting. All of the music converts energy and Sharpe is a strong participant especially on “NYC 1800s”.
